Pioneering Integrated Care for a Healthier Future
This year, Rebbeck Consulting had the privilege of attending the North America Integrated Care Conference (NACIC24), an inspiring gathering of global health leaders committed to reshaping the future of healthcare. As we reflect on our experience, several key takeaways stood out—insights that align with our mission to improve outcomes for populations through better healthcare commissioning and system design.
Breaking Down Barriers: The Alex in Calgary
During NACIC24, we had the opportunity to visit The Alex in Calgary, a remarkable example of how healthcare, housing, and social services can converge under one roof to meet community needs holistically. The Alex is more than just a community centre; it’s a model of what integrated care can achieve when designed with the community at the centre. It’s a place where physical, mental, and social needs are addressed simultaneously, ensuring individuals receive well-rounded support without ever stepping into a traditional healthcare setting.

This experience reminded us that the future of healthcare lies not in isolated interventions but in comprehensive, community-driven solutions. Imagine if every General Practice in the UK, Australia, or Canada was equipped to meet the needs of its community in such a way—we would see better long-term health outcomes, more equitable access, happier healthcare staff, and a reduction in overall system costs. This is the kind of transformative potential Rebbeck is passionate about helping organisations achieve.
Systemic Transformation and Community Empowerment
A recurring theme throughout NACIC24 was the urgent need for systemic transformation. Health systems around the world are facing significant challenges—fragmentation, rising costs, and limited accessibility. To truly serve individuals and society, we must shift towards wellness-focused, integrated care.

One of the standout discussions at NACIC24 was the role of community empowerment in health system reform. South Ayrshire’s success in involving communities directly in strategy development and implementation exemplifies the power of community-led initiatives. As Tanya Elliott insightfully posed, “Emergency response starts in communities. Why can’t health?” By empowering communities to be central in decision-making, we unlock solutions that are not only effective but are also embraced more quickly and bring cost savings back to the system.
Building Trust and Rethinking Costs
Transformative change in healthcare also requires trust—not just between individuals, but at an organisational level. During the conference, there was a strong emphasis on building lasting partnerships and fostering trust that transcends professional relationships. It’s this kind of foundational trust that will allow us to create resilient, integrated health systems.
Another compelling perspective shared at NACIC24 was the idea of reframing healthcare costs as investments in social wellbeing. Dr. Gaynor Watson-Creed’s mention of the Quality of Life Framework encourages us to consider the broader social impact of health and wellbeing initiatives. Investing in social care, for example, is not just about reducing hospitalisations but about enhancing quality of life, productivity, and cohesion within communities.
Introducing Equity into the Equation
While integrated care offers many advantages, we must also address the issue of equity. The concept of value-based healthcare has brought a welcome focus on improving outcomes from healthcare investments, but it often falls short when it comes to ensuring equitable access. At Rebbeck, we believe that healthcare should not only be effective but also fair. —where equity is explicitly considered as part of the value equation. By introducing equity into the equation, we can ensure that healthcare improvements benefit everyone, not just the most privileged.
The Path Forward
The passion to “pattern the future” that we witnessed at NACIC24 was truly inspiring. The innovative models we explored, such as The Alex, and the thought-provoking discussions on systemic transformation, social care investments, and equity reaffirmed our commitment to supporting health organisations in achieving better outcomes through advanced commissioning and reform. By continuing to empower communities, foster trust, and approach healthcare as an investment in social wellbeing, we can build systems that are equitable, efficient, and ultimately serve the people who need them most.
We’re excited to continue these conversations and work collaboratively with partners across the globe to bring these insights into action. Together, we can lead the way towards a future where health and care systems are genuinely integrated, equitable, and capable of transforming lives.
